Giving Is An Indication of the Location of Our Heart

As I have been reading through the Bible this year, God has made my mind and heart sensitive to this matter of giving for a variety of reasons. God, in both the Old Testament and the New Testament spoke about “giving.” Giving is the act of voluntarily presenting something without expecting compensation. There is a lot that can be learned in that definition alone! When we give to God through the local church are we expecting something in return? Are we giving expecting that God will bless us?

In our opening passage of Scripture, Paul is speaking to the elders of the church in Ephesus. Paul knows that this will be the last time that he has the opportunity to speak with them and influence them. Of all the things that he could have said, Paul chose to remind them of Christ’s own words:

“…It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35
